Sonia Sacoder Astor presents a massive series of multiple images with shifting horizons and differing vantage points. The paintings are in mixed media with acrylics and collages. She adds: “collages are drawn from other printed photographs which are temporarily pasted on the canvas with a non-permanent substance. As I painted various areas and added more and more images, until I am satisfied with the overall look, at which time I applied permanent acrylic gel and varnish”. Her work creates a panoramic experience along with maximum diversity and that illuminate not only the material world but also the spiritual one. She emphasizes on the space time behavior of matter. She explains, “My intent is to expand in accord with current possibilities, a cyberspace, internet, world-wide web universe. It is holistic, showing ‘the big picture’ as in Gestalt theory. Maximal Art is art of addition, all encompassing, to include even the kitchen sink, as in my painting Interiors, Exteriors”.
Sonia Astor has attended Pratt Institute and Arts Student League in New York City. She has exhibited in various museums and galleries all over United States including Hammond Museum NY, Hudson River Museum NY , Brooklyn Museum NY among others. Her work has been reviewed in numerous magazines and journals by various critics and authors. Some of them are:
"Most memorable, however, is Sonia Sacoder Astor who makes landscapes with collage and paint that include a myriad of small images--missiles, astronauts, war and rural scenes - that add up to Hieronymus Bosch-like visions”, says Vivien Raynor of New York Times.
"The universe of Sonia Astor is one of contrasts resolved. Her art shifts from small to large images from galaxies above the earth and water below, and from images derived throughout the history of art to reflections based upon yesterday’s news. Part of the fascination with Astor's visual abundance comes from attempting to identify the many individual images in the work”, says Lynne Mayocole, Gallery Director and Curator of the solo show and installation at Westchester Community College Fine Arts Gallery.
